Enrichment Workshops

Science Enrichment

In addition to curriculum based workshops, Captain Chemistry can also deliver a wide range of science activities aimed at broadening students’ experience and extending their science beyond the curriculum. A selection of popular workshops are described below. I am also happy develop new workshops if there’s something in particular you are interested in.

Kitchen Chemistry

This workshop is very popular and can be delivered as either a half or full day. Students get the chance to – safely – taste acids, experiment with household chemicals and turn vegetables different colours! An excellent choice as a Science Week enrichment activity.

Desert Island Survival

Could you survive if you were shipwrecked on a desert island?! In this exciting workshop students learn how to make and use a compass, experiment with filtering water and learn how to build and light fires. This workshop is very popular in summer time and can be delivered entirely outside!

Ship Building

Ship building is an important part of the industrial heritage of the region. Here students compete in teams to design and construct a boat. The teams then race their boats to see who has been successful! Great fun and with loads of cross curricular links.

Roman Engineering

The Romans made many key developments in engineering that we still benefit from today. In this workshop I work with students to learn about how to build a strong bridge, investigate how concrete is made and experiment with Roman designed catapults!

Mission to Mars

This awesome 2-day event involves constructing and launching a set of amazing rockets that can fly hundreds of metres into the air! The whole school can get involved over the two days taking part in a carousel of activities designed to simulate the planning and development that would go into a mission to Mars. Every class in the school can work with Captain Chemistry as well as their teachers to recruit crew members, test parachutes, plan meals for the explorers and much more!

Forensics Event

This event is great fun and involves the whole school in collecting and analysing evidence to determine which suspect committed a crime. Another 2-day workshop, this activity involves all the classes in the school working in a carousel to obtain and compare finger prints, analyse inks and interrogate witness statements and loads more exciting activities!
