Welcome

Science is a valuable and challenging subject for students to master. Most students find they can get a better understanding for science concepts if they take part in hands-on activities which promote discussion and raise questions.

Captain Chemistry offers a range of workshops to primary schools covering science topics from the National Curriculum program of study. Each workshop involves students taking part in a variety of activities including practical work, outdoor learning and data handling.

Students will benefit from extensive teaching experience and in-depth subject knowledge. To provide evidence of the progress they have made each student will demonstrate their understanding, record their findings and express their opinions in booklets provided for each workshop.

Captain Chemistry is the nick-name I earned while working as a secondary science teacher in County Durham. I have had a keen interest in science from a very young age and my favourite aspect of it has always been carrying out experiments and other practical work. I developed something of a reputation for making loud bangs!

I have now started my own business offering Science Workshops to Primary Schools in the North East of England. I have tailored each workshop to engage students, meet the needs of teaching staff and above all promote a love of science.

Each workshop fills a whole day. However, if you wish to combine aspects of more than one workshop, would like science that fits in with a certain topic (e.g. Romans, Vikings etc.), or have your own ideas entirely, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

  • Practical work

Each workshop involves a variety of different activities and, as far as possible, these are practical based tasks. Practical work is fun and engages students in the learning. It also provides opportunities for students to work in teams, listen to one another and develop leadership skills.

  • Evidence of learning.

The workshops all come with a work book in which students demonstrate their understanding, record their findings and express their opinions in booklets provided for each workshop. School staff can incorporate this into their marking if they wish, or, use it as a stimulus for more detailed written work.

  • Curriculum specific.

The basis for each workshop is the relevant section of the National Curriculum programme of study. Most workshops cover an entire science topic. The benefit of doing this all in one day is that students get continuity and the pace of the delivery keeps them engaged. Where appropriate extension work allows students to get a deeper understanding or experience the awe and wonder of exciting demonstrations.
